    Bristol Gotham Hotel

Bristol’s Guildhall, built between 1843 and 1846 and now Grade II* listed, stands as a centrepiece of the city’s historic core. Originally combining guild facilities with courtrooms and civic functions, the site incorporates remnants of a 13th-century merchants’ guild and 16th-century walls and windows within its Victorian Gothic architecture. It later served as an assizes courthouse until 1993 and was remodelled after wartime bomb damage, retaining much of its original charm, including figurative stone sculptures and stained-glass windows. Following the relocation of the county court in 2011, the Guildhall remained vacant until plans for its transformation into a luxury hotel gained momentum in 2013.

The Gotham Hotel group, part of Bespoke Hotels, is now revitalising this landmark with a £multi-million redevelopment. Work began in January 2023 to convert the imposing building into a 75-bedroom, five-star boutique hotel. The scheme will feature a fine-dining restaurant, an indulgent spa, and a rooftop terrace bar, with earlier concepts even proposing a rooftop pool. Public art will play a central role in the guest experience, with a striking light installation by glass artist Jahday Ford illuminating the three-storey clocktower entrance. The project is led by renowned architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and delivered by Paton Developments.

The restoration preserves key heritage elements such as the Neo-Gothic façades, grand interiors, and a historically significant Jacobean chimneypiece from 1626. Improvements will enhance public access with revitalised entrances on Broad Street and Small Street, alongside potential new pedestrian links. Once open in early 2026, the Gotham Bristol Hotel will fuse historical architecture with bold, contemporary design, delivering an opulent destination that enhances Bristol’s hospitality scene and reinforces its historic centre as a vibrant cultural and tourism hub.
